Industrial Vision System for Wood Packaging in the Agri-Food Industry

Project Overview

Our client specialized in the manufacturing of wooden packaging wanted to implement a quality control system to ensure the compliance and reliability of its products. Wooden packaging is widely used in the agri-food industry: it is crucial to ensure its robustness, safety, and durability.

Objectives

The client's request was to design and implement a quality control process using industrial vision to detect the following defects :

  • Cracks,
  • Knots,
  • Holes,
  • Splinters,
  • Color and texture variations,
  • Surface imperfections.

Project Phases

Analysis of Potential Defects :

  • Identify common defects in wooden packaging, such as cracks, splinters, defective knots, color variations, etc.
  • Define the visual characteristics of compliant and non-compliant products,
  • Select suitable cameras, lenses, and lighting to capture high-quality images of wooden packaging,
  • Evaluate Industrial Vision systems available on the market, considering performance, accuracy, and image processing capabilities.

Development of Image Processing Algorithms :

  • Design and develop image processing algorithms to analyze images captured by the cameras.
  • Program defect detection and visual feature analysis algorithms to identify anomalies in wooden packaging.

Configuration of the Industrial Vision System

  • Set up the vision system by integrating cameras, image processing software, and lighting devices.
  • Configure image capture parameters, processing algorithms, and detection thresholds to meet quality control criteria.

System Testing and Optimization :

  • Perform tests using representative samples of wooden packaging with different known defects.
  • Analyze test results, adjust system parameters, and optimize algorithms to improve inspection accuracy and reliability.

Integration of the System into the Production Line:

  • Integrate the Industrial Vision system into the wooden packaging production line.
  • Automate the inspection and sorting process of compliant and non-compliant products using the information provided by the Vision system.

Results :

  • Scrap rate below 0.5%
  • Zero quality non-conformities
  • Economic gain

Benefits:

  • Improved product quality and reliability
  • Reduced production costs
  • Increased production efficiency
  • Improved traceability and compliance
  • Enhanced customer satisfaction
